Where can you check the two storage totals?

Apps, photos and downloaded files use your iPhone's device storage. iCloud stores items such as photos and files and keeps them up to date across devices using the same Apple Account.

This comparison follows Apple's storage guidance, checked October 25, 2026. Increasing your iCloud plan does not change the iPhone's built-in capacity.

If iCloud is full, its features may stop staying up to date until you free space or change your plan. Having room on the iPhone alone does not confirm that photo syncing is working.

How does offloading differ from deleting an app?

Tap an app in the device storage screen to see its usage. Apple says offloading frees the space used by the app while keeping its documents and data on the device. Deleting removes the app and its related data.

If you are unsure what to remove, read the recommendations on that screen. Open a recommendation and read the names of apps to offload or content to delete before proceeding. Because documents and data remain after offloading, do not assume it will free the entire displayed amount.

Can you keep photos while reducing device usage?

With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage enabled, originals are stored in iCloud, while space-saving copies can remain on the device as needed. iCloud must also have room for the photos.

Open Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos to check syncing and storage optimization. Apple's current guidance adds an iPhone Storage step before selecting optimization on iOS 27 or later. On iOS 26 or earlier, select Optimize Storage directly. Follow the path for your installed version.

There is no fixed amount of space or completion time to promise. Apple says upload time depends on library size and internet speed. Do not assume a particular reduction immediately after changing the setting.

Can you delete device photos after enabling iCloud Photos?

Deleting a photo on a device using iCloud Photos also deletes it on other devices using that library. Distinguish deletion from optimization so an attempt to free iPhone space does not remove photos elsewhere.

Keep a separate copy of photos you want to retain and check that the files open before removing them. If you need originals away from home, confirm their downloads while connected. When only space-saving versions remain locally, downloading originals needs Wi-Fi or cellular access.
